I have fallen in love with these bad ass Rocky Mountains! I mean, crazy infatuation in-love, when you can’t stop thinking about your soulmate and are longing for the next chance to be together. If I was a cartoon character, I would have hearts for pupils and be falling over backward, walking into traffic, with my chest exploding!
Growing up in Ontario, I had absolutely no idea what was going on out here in Alberta along the Continental Divide. No idea at all. The pictures in textbooks do nothing for the real thing. The drive from Revelstoke to Lake Louise was my favorite drive on the trip so far. We thought the Bear Tooth Mountains were impressive, and the mountain ranges in B.C. until we drove from Revelstoke, BC to Lake Louise, Alberta.
With every turn on the Transcontinental Hwy, I didn’t think it could get any more beautiful, and it did! I’m even in love with the air. The pictures can’t even come close to capturing the sights.
Our trip into Alberta came with an added bonus. My second cousin Amanda lives in Calgary and on a whim, I decided to message her to see if she might have an hour for a quick pint and catch-up. She did! Not only did she have an hour, she and her boyfriend Doug drove from Calgary to meet us in Lake Louise. We walked around the lake together (another jaw-dropping site), got re-aquainted, and Amanda invited us to Calgary the next day to meet her horse.
We’ve never been to Spruce Meadows, so she showed us around and then took us out to the near-by barn where Zeke lives. The kids got to groom him, give him treats, and get up close. I’m always a little freaked out around horses, so I did some major deep-breathing through it all. Thankfully, Amanda is a complete natural and a pro and was a solid teacher for the cubs. She also suited up and took Zeke for a few runs around the ring and showed the kids his (and her) mad jumping skills.
