Drive Across the Prairies to the Peg!

The view changes significantly when you start reaching middle Alberta (no more mountains). The gas prices are much lower (less than $1 a liter) which is crazy! In most places it’s well over $1 per litre, which is approx. $3.80 – $4.00 per gallon. Alberta is home to the tar sands and the largest oil industry in Canada, so I suspect a discount is in order.

We noticed the beautiful yellow blankets of crops and later discovered they are canola fields, and of course, Canola oil was invented in Canada (duh). canolaIt was a long haul to Regina, Saskatchewan for one night in a hotel with a water slide. We stopped for dinner in Moose Jaw, well, just because when else will you be in a town called Moose Jaw, and Ben loves a movie called Slapshot. One of the characters in the movie is from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. I just love saying that…Saskatchewan. And of course, Hudson noticed the similarity of the word “Regina” to a female body party. He giggles every time. There are several limericks about a girl from Regina, but I’ll just leave it at that.DSCN5653

The kids have also started negotiating for Timbits. Their favourite one is, “We’ve only had 2 boxes of Timbits but we are going to be in 5 provinces, so we should have at least 5.”

We made it to Winnipeg, Manitoba after our one quick night in Regina, and were greeted by Nana-girl! Thankfully, we talked her into flying out to meet us for a portion of the trip. We always see each other in the summer, and since we aren’t going to Toronto this summer, we really wanted to find a way to connect. It took a little convincing, but she made it and we enjoyed a great dinner at Boon Burger (thanks for the suggestion, Sista!), had some fun in the pool, and Ben and I had our first official night “out”. We went down to the hotel lobby bar and watched the Toronto Argos play the Saskatchewan Roughriders. I love it!

Oh, and we’ve renamed the cargo bag on the back of the car “the body bag”. We have to wonder what people are thinking when we lug this thing into the hotel. We are probably being tracked by the RCMP and the FBI!DSCN5659

LMAO! Ben standing at the Moose Jaw sign, instant classic! I laughed right out loud! All that was missing was glasses with tape and the Chiefs jersey! Just loving the adventures – it makes me smile! xo
