It was so nice to be home on Canada Day! I really should have given the need for Canada Day gear more thought at departure. It reminds me of the trip to the World Series Parade for the Royals and we only had Blue Jay gear. We found enough white and red to piece together our Canadiana uniforms and headed on foot to Assiniboine Park for a Family Fun Festival which included lots of free inflatables for the kids, live music, a 50/50 draw, and poutine. We stayed long enough to feel the patriotic vibes and headed back to the hotel for more pool time and dinner at the Olive Garden (one of the kids favourite).
Ben and I took some time the next day to head to the Canadian Human Rights Museum while the kids went to see Finding Dory with Nana (a fair compromise). We were greeted by Gandhi and departed with Malala’s traveling exhibit and climbing up the Tower of Hope.
It was a pretty incredible museum and I’m really glad we had the chance to explore at our own pace. The day ended with another one of the “Top 5 Must-Sees in Winnipeg” by visiting BDI; Bridge Drive-In. It was also recommended by a friend who is a native Pegger, so we had to go! We hit 3 of the 5 things listed and made the most of our visit.
We had one more planned stop in Quetico Provincial Park, and still had to map the rest of the way home. Turns out Ben remembered going to Bemidji, Minnesota for a music convention in high-school, and we found a State Park on Lake Bemidji and then Clear Lake, Iowa as a final stop. We decided to camp the rest of the way, rain or shine.
A short note about Quetico (just outside of Atikokan which evidently is the Canoe Capital of Canada)…don’t go to Quetico! The mosquitoes were so thick we were completely overcome. Making dinner was tricky and we all did some serious crazy dances to keep the bugs away. When I woke up in the morning, the tent was covered in thousands of mosquitoes! I felt like I was in a lab and they were studying me! It was a little freaky and we packed up as quickly as possible to get to less forested lands. I wish the photo captured the actual number of mozzies….it was unreal!!
