Back in the US for 4th of July

The drive to Lake Bemidji took us through the border crossing at Fort Frances, Ontario. The border agent was very confused when we told him where we lived…we explained a little further that we’ve traveled over 4,500 miles doing a huge loop from South Dakota, up to Washington state and across Western Canada. He actually said, “you choose to come through Fort Frances?”. I guess they don’t get a lot of people who decide to make the added journey to Quetico Provincial Park. We didn’t get the mosquito memo. I was certain we would unpack hundreds of Ontario mosquitoes when we opened up the tent introducing an invasive species into Minnesota.

A campsite with a playground is an added bonus for the cubs, so they rushed off to play while we unearthed the gear. We also found a waterfront festival with a carnival and yes, we knowingly decided to go. The rides looked like they were from the 70’s (perhaps that means they had German engineered parts) and we all survived without injury.

There were many challenging moments to witness at the Carnival, but by far, one thing that will stick with me were the choices of “small” prizes at the Duck Pond game. Pick a duck and the letter on the bottom (S, M, L, XL) corresponds to the winning prize. The kids both picked an “S” duck. The selection included butterfly nets, princess tiaras, hot wheels cars, inflatable balls, and these…DSCN5802inflatable AK47’s. And believe it or not, people were choosing these!!

Happy 4th! We made it back to the campsite to see some fireworks over the lake, and a beautiful sunset (erasing all former images).DSCN5805

WHAAAT!?!?!?! I am completely speechless – that visual of a blowup AK47 defies description. My goodness! Good ol’ USA. I’m glad the kiddos got to see fireworks and enjoy the 4th.
